Plenty of people in Bangkok wonder if they can knock out Koh Larn in a day. You can — but it's a long, tightly-timed day, and it's far more relaxed if you stay a night in Pattaya. Here's the honest logistics either way.
Bangkok to Pattaya first
Koh Larn's only practical gateway is Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier, so first you get to Pattaya (roughly 2 hours, traffic depending). Options: a bus from Ekkamai (Eastern) bus terminal, a minivan, a private taxi/transfer, or — if timing aligns — the train. Buses are cheap and frequent; a private car is fastest and most flexible for an early start.
Then Pattaya to the island
From central Pattaya it's a short taxi, Grab or baht bus to Bali Hai Pier, then the public ferry (~40฿, ~30–45 min) to Na Baan, or a speedboat (~15–20 min) that can land at any beach. See our getting-there guide for the full breakdown.
The day-trip timing problem
Here's the catch: ~2 hours each way to Pattaya plus the ferry at each end eats your day, and you must be back at the island's pier for the last boat (late afternoon/early evening, varies). Do the maths and a Bangkok day trip gives you only a few hours on the sand, with zero slack if a bus is slow or you miss a ferry. It's doable, but it's a dawn start and a long day for a short swim.
The better way
- Stay a night (or two) in Pattaya and do Koh Larn as a relaxed half- or full-day from there.
- Or take an organised Bangkok day tour if you want zero logistics — you trade money and flexibility for someone else handling the timing.
- If you must do it independently in a day, leave Bangkok at dawn, take a speedboat both ways to save time, and watch the clock all day.
Tip: If your Bangkok schedule is tight, treat Koh Larn as the reason to spend one night in Pattaya rather than a same-day round trip. The island rewards a calm morning far more than a frantic dash.
The verdict
Doable from Bangkok in a day only if you start early and accept a long haul for a few hours of beach. Far better as part of an overnight in Pattaya. Either way, here's how to cross to the island.
