Almost every disappointed Koh Larn review comes down to one thing: the visitor turned up at the busiest beach at the busiest time and found exactly what you'd expect. Crowds are the island's main flaw — and also the most avoidable one. A few simple choices put real space between you and the crush.

Time it right

The day-trip wave lands mid-to-late morning and clears in the late afternoon. Take one of the first ferries and you'll get an hour or two of calm, clear water before the boats arrive. Better still, stay overnight: once the last day-boat leaves, the island empties and the beaches are close to your own. Midweek beats weekends, and avoid Thai public holidays if you can.

Choose the right beach

Tawaen is the busiest by a distance — it's where the boats and facilities concentrate. Step away from it and the crowds drop off fast: Samae is livelier-but-breathable, Tien is quieter and scenic, and Thong Lang, Laem Tien and Sangwan are properly low-key (at the cost of facilities). Simply not defaulting to Tawaen solves most of the problem.

Walk a little

Even on a busy beach, the crowd clusters near the access road and the restaurants. Walk five minutes toward a rocky headland and you'll often find space and clearer water. Most people won't make the effort — which is exactly why it works.

  • First ferries, not mid-morning ones.
  • Midweek over weekends; avoid public holidays.
  • Samae or Tien over Tawaen for the swim.
  • Walk toward the quiet ends of any beach.
  • Stay overnight for the empty evening and dawn.

Tip: If you do only one thing: catch an early boat. It fixes the crowds and the water clarity at the same time.
