Fun if you're careful — agree the price, photograph any existing damage, and don't get scammed.

Riding a jet ski across the bay is a genuine blast, and they're easy to find at Tawaen and Samae. But this is the one activity on the island where we lead with a warning rather than a recommendation. The wider Pattaya area has a long, well-documented reputation for jet-ski damage-deposit scams: you return the ski, the operator 'finds' a scratch or crack that was already there, and demands thousands of baht — sometimes while holding your passport. It doesn't happen on every rental, but it happens often enough that you must protect yourself before you ride. Do that, ride sensibly, and it's great fun. Skip the precautions and you're gambling.

How it works

You pay (and usually leave a deposit) for a set time, get a quick briefing and a life jacket, and ride within a permitted area. An operator boat often watches from the water.

Who it's for

Confident adults comfortable controlling a powerful machine on open water. Not for young children to drive; mind other swimmers and boats at all times.

What to expect

Fast, fun, and over quickly. Also: a deposit, a hard sell, and — if you're unlucky — a damage dispute on return. Go in with eyes open.

The honest caution

This is the big one. Before you ride: film and photograph the entire ski from every angle, including existing scratches and cracks, with the operator watching. Agree the price and deposit in writing if you can. Never hand over your passport as a deposit — offer a photocopy or cash instead. On return, film it again. If a dispute starts, stay calm and call the Tourist Police on 1155.

Safety

Photograph and video the ski for existing damage before riding, agree price clearly, wear the life jacket, keep well clear of swimmers and boats, and never leave your passport as deposit.

Good to know

  • Film the machine before AND after
  • Never hand over your passport as deposit
  • Agree price and deposit up front
  • Know the damage-dispute reputation and act accordingly
  • Tourist Police: 1155
For it
  • Fast and genuinely fun
  • Easy to find at the busy beaches
  • Short — fits any day
Against it
  • Well-known deposit-scam risk in the area
  • Pricey for the time

Alternatives: Want the speed without the deposit risk? A banana boat is cheap, daft fun with none of the scam exposure; parasailing gives the thrill from the air.
