Modest but real — clear-ish water and tropical fish, best off the rocky ends of Samae and Tien.

Snorkeling is the best free thing to do on Koh Larn, as long as you set expectations correctly. This is the Gulf of Thailand, not the Andaman Sea, so the coral is patchy and the water won't have that glass-clear, fifteen-metre visibility of Krabi or the Similans. What you do get, on a calm morning at the right spot, is clear-enough water over rocks and seagrass with plenty of small tropical fish — parrotfish, damsels, the odd wrasse — close to shore. The rocky points at either end of Samae and the margins of Tien and Nual are the picks. Get in early, before the boats and swimmers stir up the sand, and you'll have the best of it.

How it works

Bring or rent a mask and snorkel, wade or swim out to the rocky edges of a clear beach, and float. No boat or guide needed for shore snorkeling. For better water, join a half-day boat snorkel trip that runs from Tawaen out to clearer spots around the island.

Who it's for

Anyone who can swim and is comfortable with their face in the water. Strong swimmers get the most from the deeper rock edges; beginners should stay shallow and inside calm areas.

What to expect

Clear-ish water, schools of small fish, rocky and seagrass bottom, occasional patchy coral. Visibility varies hugely with weather and time of day. Not a guaranteed reef spectacle — a pleasant, accessible swim with fish.

Safety

Watch for boat lanes and buoys, never snorkel into watersports zones, mind your footing on rocks, and check for any jellyfish notices in the monsoon months. Don't touch coral or fish.
