The island's hilltops pay off — sea, beaches and Pattaya skyline in one sweep.

For an island that's only about 4.6 km long, Koh Larn is surprisingly hilly — its highest point tops 180 metres — and that vertical relief is a gift for views. Ride up onto the central ridge and you get wide sweeps over the bays, the surrounding sea dotted with boats, and on a clear day the Pattaya skyline shimmering across the water. Several viewpoints are signed and reachable by scooter, often as a loop that takes in the Big Buddha and the KOH LARN hillside sign. They're free, they're quick, and late afternoon light makes them sing. The catch is the roads: steep, narrow and best left to confident riders.

How it works

Ride or get a songthaew up to the ridge and stop at the marked viewpoints. Most are a few steps from where you park; some involve a short climb. String several together into a scenic loop.

Who it's for

Anyone who likes a view and a photo. Confident scooter riders get the most freedom; nervous riders should take a songthaew or walk the worst gradients.

What to expect

Wide sea-and-island panoramas, the Pattaya skyline across the water, and a breezy break from the beach. Free and uncrowded outside peak times.

Safety

Roads are steep and narrow — ride a scooter only if you're confident, walk the worst gradients, and watch for traffic and loose gravel.

Good to know

  • Combine with the Big Buddha and the KOH LARN sign
  • Steep hills — confident riders only
  • Sunset photos from the west
  • Take water — it's hot up there
For it
  • Free and scenic
  • Easy to combine into a loop
  • Great photos and a cool breeze
Against it
  • Steep, narrow access roads
  • Hot midday
  • Best by scooter, which has its own risks

Alternatives: If heights and hills aren't your thing, the beach-level scenery at Samae and Tien is lovely too. For a single must-do high point, make it the Big Buddha.
